Lonely Lake Canoe Trip

First canoe trip of the year! We did an overnight at Lonely Lake. Lots of wildlife!
1 moose, 1 black bear, lots of beavers, 1 muskrat.
as far as birds go: Pacific & Common Loons, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Rusty Blackbirds, Artic Terns, Gray Jay, Ring-necked Ducks and more.
It was a gorgeous weekend with a nice breeze to keep the skeeters away. Good thing the mosquitos are of the large & slow variety right now...

Emma's not smart enough to run on shore...

Emma fixated on some juvenile fish near a beaver lodge.
We watched another beaver swim out of his lodge.

Emma spent most of her time whining while she was in the canoe.
She spent her time on land alternating between eating beaver chews and eating grass.

9 days around Colorado

My little sister, Kristina, and three of her friends visited every county court house in Colorado in 9 days. For those of you that haven't seen my sister in a long time, there are some fun pictures on their blog site: The County Trip. She's almost 19!!! yikes. brings back some interesting memories...

Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival

The 3 of us spent the weekend in Homer for the 14th annual shorebird festival.
It rained most of the time but we had a great time meeting up with friends.
Spent a lot of time eating yummy food - always a trip to Sourdough's for breakfast.
I dragged Dave & Cory to the only winery in Alaska, Bear Creek Winery (bearcreekwinery.com)
and tasted some fantastic berry wines.
We also checked out the boats at the wooden boat festival. and of course, the birds.

The USFWS staff is getting ready to deploy field techinicians to the camps along the Aleutians. I'm going to miss going out to the islands this year...

Goldilocks & the 3 Bears

Josh & Lincoln left for Fairbanks this morning with empty coolers.
The timing was a little too early. They did stalk a big one 2 days ago and it sounded like that was fun. I'm sure the girls are in some way relieved to hear the news - good for the bears, bad for the boys. Better luck next time!

We did spend lots of quality time with them, nice to have visitors!
