Last Day in Paradise

Last day. Oh... so SAD! After we checked out of the condo, we went to Poipu Beach for one last snorkel. It was pretty windy and the gusts made the sand fly - nothing like a little exfoliation. Right before we left, a monk seal came up on the beach!
After lunch, we went to Shipwreck Beach and walked on the lithified cliffs above the ocean. The view below is the beach and the Hyatt compound.Cute little gecko at the airport. He helped us re-pack our luggage. We wish we stayed a little longer, already planning our next visit to the Islands! Came back to SNOW. It's still WINTER here!!! Very disappointing! hopefully this means that summer will last a little longer..

Queen's Bath

After the Hanalei River, we headed over to Queen's Bath for a dip and a snorkel.
The bath is located in lava rocks right along the ocean.
Unfortunately, the surf was a little too high and the bath wasn't safe for swimming.
Here's a video of some tadpoles that we found in some tidepools. We suspect that they develop into those flattened bullfrogs that we've seen around the island. The second video is of the surf.

Hanalei River

We didn't have enough time to paddle the Hanalei River so we drove down to it. The guide books promised good birding along the river.
Sure enough, we found a group of nenes in the back, a pair of moorhens in the foreground. These nenes were banded, also! And we also saw some Koloa ducks! Can't really see this drake, I know...another reason to invest in a digital SLR + zoom.
We drove down the road a little more and hiked the first mile of the Okolehao Trail which goes up into the hills.
FWS put down this mesh fabric over the trail, not sure what the purpose was but it definitely helped lessen the slippery factor on the trail.
View from a lookout.

schooling fish video

took this video from the pier off on of the beaches on the North shore. Can't really see the fish until they move towards the end.

Na Pali Coast Trail

Next day we ventured back to the North and hiked the first 2 mi of the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast. We wanted to do 2 more miles but we were running out of days and wanted to check out a few more sights before we left. Below is a view of Ke'e Beach, which is supposed to be great for snorkeling.view of the coast.
very lush
the trail was a little muddy
In order to get Hanakapi'ai Beach, this stream had to be crossed. We made some observations before we decided on the best route: couple 1 - man charges into stream with shoes on, coerces girlfriend to do the same, girlfriend loses balance due to current and ends up chest deep in the stream.... OK. That didn't look like fun. couple 2 - husband and wife each have a walking stick, they venture downstream to the rocks in the photo below, wife was able to use rocks as stepping stones with the help of the walking stick for balance, husband took a little more time and just walked through the stream. hmmmm. OK. looks do-able but neither one of us has a walking stick. couple 3 - older guy (probably 2x our age) and his female partner take their shoes off and walk the same path through the stream as couple 1 but lean on the rocks for stability against the current. Well, crap, if they can do it, we can do it, too.
This is the beach that was waiting for us. Had some lunch, stared down a feral black cat and then headed back.Dave, Dave, Dave of the jungle!

Maha'ulepu Beach walk

Since the North shore was experience heavy rain again, we stayed on the South shore and went for a walk on the cliffs above the Maha'ulepu Beaches.
Someone left a friendly greeting. Along with some broken glass from beer bottles...
YIKES! That couple didn't get washed away, but we didn't head out to that point anyways.
Not sure what these guys were fishing for but they looked pretty serious.
The road was lined with egrets.
We had lunch from the Fish Market in Koloa - Kalua pork and ahi sashimi! Spent the afternoon on the beach and snorkeling.
