Heading out to Cold Bay

I'm going out to Cold Bay to help Dave with his field work - banding and collecting blood samples from eiders. We'll be out there until 8 Sept. I'm looking forward to it as I've never been out there before. Tell you all about it when we get back!

Paper 1: Published!!!

I finally published my first paper from my master's thesis:

Heath & Audrey did a great job capturing all the emotions and everyone's personalities.
That said, the words 'demure' & 'sophisticated' don't really apply to me to they?? ha ha.

Looking at these photos makes me want to do it ALL over again.
ALL of it except for the planning, that is. Let's have the party ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!
Parts of that weekend are just complete blurs!

Resurrection Pass Trail

We hiked the Resurrection Pass Trail this weekend. 39 miles. Dave was a little concerned because he's been inactive for a while and I've been a little more sedentary the past 3 weeks. So we broke up the trip into 4 days.

• Day 1: 7 miles to Juneau Lake camp site. We cheated a little bit and started at the Bean Creek trail which cut off 2 miles.
• Day 2: 4 miles to Swan Lake cabin.
• Day 3: 14 miles to Fox Creek cabin
• Day 4: 12 miles to Hope trail head

The weather was perfect. Not too hot. And not much rain at all. It was nice to finally spend some time with each other after getting married. Dave underestimated our ability and the hike was pleasant - mostly just sore feet and stiff legs at the end.

Honeymoon with Yumi: Part Deux

This trip was about searching for juvenile murrelets. A little boring but the scenery, as usual, was phenomenal and it didn't rain this trip! We took the blue naiad from Seward/Resurrection Bay around the cape to Aialik the first day. Below is a self-portrait at the cape. But you can't see the cape in the background.

We conducted surveys along the coastlines of Aialik Bay and Northwestern Fjord which made for some long days. Yumi was very concerned about observer burnout so we took frequent breaks.another panorama of Aialikwe stayed at the Aialik Bay Ranger Station. this is the view from the beach.Yumi, in the middle of a bird observation.

Smelled really great.

We saw several black bears in Aialik.

A coyote came and checked us out while we were pulled up on a beach, working on the boat.
We didn't even hear it come down. I looked up at one point and there it was, maybe 12 ft away from us. Not even concerned that we were there. Checked us out. Walked up the beach. Stopped and checked us out several more times before deciding against eating us.
