Tsunami advisories were canceled Saturday in Alaska and Hawaii after officials determined waves from powerful earthquake in the northern Pacific were too small to pose a threat.
A tsunami of about 1 foot was recorded Friday night at Shemya, Alaska, at the western end of the Aleutians, the National Weather Service said. The warning prompted more than two dozen people on a remote Aleutian island to take refuge in an underground shelter.
"It's one of those situations where the indications are, when you look at Shemya and the other places in Japan, it really doesn't meet the criteria to be destructive," said National Weather Service spokesman Greg Romano.
The tsunami notices were spurred by an 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off Japan's northern coast in the Pacific on Friday night.
Dave, Emma and I packed up some bags, picked up our friend Ann R. because her was stuck in her driveway and drove over to Mandy's at mile 7. By the time Ann & Dave managed to skirt around the front-end loader that was plowing Mandy's lot to get into her house, the warning had been canceled. A little scary. Better to be safe than dying in a tsunami...
