BBQ

Dave organized a surprise party for me last night to welcome me permanently to Seward.
I was definitely surprised. We got back from our hike up the Mt. Alice trail and I was very confused - why are there cars and balloons and people with beers in our yard? The BBQ was supposed to be at Caroline & Ann's!? What are these people doing here? Who's birthday is it? Then his behavior that afternoon started to make sense - why is he taking so long to hike back down? Why is he just standing there on the trail? He was doing a lot of things to stall our return home to make sure everyone had enough time to arrive at the house before we got there.

the girls made a Seward survival basket for me!
lots of chocolate in the basket!!

Tuula with the champagne.
We also celebrated our award from the North Pacific Research Board to conduct diet studies on the eiders at the sealife center. We didn't get the full amount of funding that we asked for but it still means that I might have a job for at least a year...details need to be worked out. But nevertheless, very exciting to have a proposal funded!
