We brought Max and Noah home 2 weeks ago. They've been gaining tons of weight. Max is now 6lb 9oz and Noah is 7lb 4oz. Their cheeks are filling out, appetites growing, and sleeping pretty well. This newborn stage has been much easier the second time around. Even with 2 of them. We, as parents, are a lot less stressed out this time. Not everything is brand-new to us. I think it also helps that I'm not recovering from a C-section again. Being able to physically recover more quickly and not be on pain medication has made the mental transition to being a parent of 3 kids a lot easier!
I am also getting more sleep right now than the first time around, which helps my mental stability. For the first 4 months of Leo's life, he was breast fed which meant I got up for all the feedings. I thought I was going to lose my mind, die, or both at 4 months. At that point, we finally introduced the bottle and Dave started helping with the night feedings and I felt much better. Amazing what 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep will do. Because Max and Noah were started on a bottle in the NICU, Dave, Nana, and Ama are able to help with the feedings. Dave has been taking the late night shift (~ 9PM - 3AM). I've been taking the early morning shift starting at 4AM. And I go to bed when Leo goes to bed between 10-11PM so Dave and I are both averaging about 5 hours of sleep at night which is great! Still tired but it's better than 5 hours pieced together during a 24 hour period. We are trying to keep them on the same schedule - a little staggered so we don't have to feed them both at once. But sometimes they wake at the same time and then we have to find creative ways to feed them both at the same time.
Leo is adjusting. It's hard for him to share his Mama, but he's been nothing but loving toward his brothers. He is always kissing them, petting them on the head and calling them 'my babies'. When they cry, he tells them that it's going to be OK. It's very sweet to watch.
I think the hardest adjustment for me is figuring out how to spend quality time with all 3 kids! and also finding time for myself and Dave.
